Derivation: Named in honour of A. van Leeuwenhoek, 1632-1723, Dutch zoologist and one of the earliest users of the microscope.

Description:
Annuals with alternate leaves along the stem, sessile or petiolate, entire.
Inflorescence a thyrse with 1-several monochasia, sparsely glandular-pubescent; sepals scarcely connate, subequal; corolla with the tube often longer than the sepals, not split, zygomorphic with subequal lobes radiating; labellum (5th petal) at least half as long as the corolla lobes, erect, hooded and covering the column, irritable; column (fused style and stamens) not irritable, erect, with terminal anthers and a stigma covered by the labellum; ovary inferior, with 2 carpels, 1- or incompletely 2-celled with many ovules on a basal placenta.
