Citation: Desf., Mém. Mus. Hist. Nat. Paris 4:8 (1818).

Derivation: Greek heteros, different, variable; dendron, a tree.

Synonymy: Heterodendron Desf. of some authors. 4 species; endemic to Australia.

Common name: None

Description:
Polygamous shrubs or trees; leaves simple, entire or lobed.

Flowers usually bisexual, in short terminal panicles; calyx cup-shaped with 5 or 6 very short lobes, or entire; petals 0; disk small, annular; stamens 6-15, filaments glabrous, to 2.5 mm long, anthers exserted; ovary 2-4-celled, lobed, 1 ovule per cell; style thick, less than 1 mm long, with an obtuse-lobed stigma.

Fruit irregularly dehiscent, of 1-4 usually 2 hard globular coriaceous lobes; seeds partly enclosed in a large fleshy aril.
