Description:
Sporophytes herbaceous, perennial, terrestrial (more rarely epiphytic); rhizome short, erect, hirsute; roots thick and fleshy; fronds simple or divided, composed of a sterile lamina and fertile spike; sporangia aggregated into a spike, fused together or free; spores thick-walled, very numerous.

Distribution:  3 genera, about 70 species; cosmopolitan.
