There are two species of Hakea with toothed ridges present on the fruit. One is H. rhombales where the toothed ridges are to be found on either side of the suture. The other is H. cristata where the toothed ridges can occur in the vicinity of the suture, but may also be present elsewhere on the body of the fruit.

In the case of H. cristata these ridges mimic the toothing of the leaves, thus making it difficult to see the fruits on the plant.
