Citation: Wolf, Gen. Pl. 111 (1776).

Derivation: Latin vacca, cow, because the plant was considered good fodder.

Synonymy: Not Applicable

Common name: Soapworts.

Description:
Annual plants with a tap root; leaves ovate to lanceolate, sessile.

Inflorescence a lax terminal cyme; calyx ovoid, 5-toothed, with 5 nerves forming 5 prominent angles; petal claws winged, coronal scales absent; stamens 10; styles 2.

Capsule opening by 4 valves; hilum lateral.

Distribution:  4 species in Europe, the Mediterranean and western Asia.
