Utricularia australis

Citation: R. Br., Prod. Fl. Nov. Holl. 430 (1810).

Synonymy: Utricularia flexuosa

Common name: Yellow bladderwort.

Description:
Suspended aquatic with branched filiform stolons up to 50 cm long; leaves numerous, alternate on the stolons, 1.5-4 cm long, each divided from the base into 2 primary capillary segments, these again repeatedly dichotomously divided into very numerous further capillary segments, the ultimate segments laterally and apically minutely setulose; traps usually present, lateral on the segments, ovoid, 1-2 mm long.

Inflorescence (not seen in S.Aust.) erect, emergent up to 40 cm high; flowers 4-10, alternate; bracts basifixed, orbicular, 3-5 mm long; bracteoles absent; 2 or 3 sterile bracts always present on the peduncle; calyx lobes subequal, ovate-oblong, c. 3 mm long; corolla yellow, c. 15 mm long, the upper lip ovate, the lower lip much larger, orbicular, with a raised gibbous palate; spur broadly conical, obtuse, shorter than the lip.

Capsule and seeds extremely rare.
