Common name: Sea spinach.
Prostrate partly succulent undershrub with papillae and some hairs; leaves narrowed to the base, obovate or nearly orbicular, covered with glistening water-storage cells, 1-6 cm long.
Flowers in groups of 3-5 in the upper axils, on peduncles 3-10 mm long; perianth lobes 4, yellow inside, densely papillose outside; stamens 12 to numerous; styles usually 4.
Fruit flat on top, with 4 wings and smaller ridges between, dry, c. 10 mm long. (R. S. Adamson (1955) Jl S. Afr. Bot. 21:109-154).
