Citation: P. Beauv., Agrost. 73 (1812).

Derivation: Greek schisma, division; the lemma is split at the top.

Synonymy: Not Applicable

Common name: None

Description:
Annual grasses.

Spikelets several-flowered, pedicellate, compressed laterally; rhachilla disarticulating between the flowers; glumes persistent, subequal, 5-7-nerved, longer than the individual flowers, but not exceeding the spikelet; lemmas 9-nerved, rounded on the back, villous-ciliate on the 2 outer nerves, 2-fid at the summit and with a short mucro in the notch; palea cuneate, entire at the summit.

Distribution:  5 species from Africa, the Mediterranean and India.
