Common name: Smooth (or inland) buttercup.

Description:
Annual, 2-35 cm high; stems branching from the base, glabrous, or sparingly pilose in the lower part; seedling leaves with lamina ovate, entire 3-6 mm long, later leaves trifid, adult leaves 1-2 cm broad, ternate and ternately dissected into lanceolate to linear-lanceolate lobes, glabrous or sometimes sparingly pilose; petioles 1.5-5 cm long, with more or less hyaline basal sheaths usually long-ciliate; upper bracts linear, c. 4-6 mm long.

Flowers 2-3 mm diam., lower pedicellate with fruiting pedicels to 3 cm long, upper subsessile; sepals 3-5, elliptic to obovate-oblong, 1.7-2 mm long, hyaline, 3-nerved with the lateral nerves often poorly developed; petals 1 or 2, elliptic to ovate-spathulate, 1.5-2 mm long, 1-3-nerved, the lateral nerves poorly developed, the centre nerve usually forked near the apex; nectary a semicircular to semi-elliptic flap with a thin line of glandular tissue, a half to two-thirds of the petal length above the base; stamens 3-5; carpels 6-20.

Achenes suborbicular to broadly ovate, 2-3 mm long, strongly flattened and more or less twisted with the smooth margins slightly thickened, a pale reddish-brown, with a short smooth triangular beak; torus glabrous.
