Description:
Shrubs or trees, mostly deciduous, often spiny when young; sparsely pubescent to glabrescent; leaves simple (lobed in young phases), petiolate; stipules caducous.

Inflorescence corymbose; petals white or pinkish, shortly clawed; stamens 15-30, anthers reddish-pink; carpels 2-5, connate; ovules 2; styles 2-5, free; ovary inferior.

Fruit a pyriform to subglobose pome; stone cells abundant.

Distribution:  12-15 species, from Europe and Asia; 2 species, P. communis L., European pear, and P. pyrifolia (Burman f.)Nakai, sand pear, Asian pear, widely cultivated for fruits, a few as ornamentals.
