Description:
Branching annuals forming mats to c. 80 cm wide, stems creeping or ascending to c. 15 cm high, sometimes red; leaves obtuse, spathulate or oblong-ovate, to 1-2 rarely 3 x 0.8 cm, petiolate.
Spikes solitary or 2 or 3 (rarely more) approximated, terminal or more often sessile in axils, subglobular becoming elongate to cylindrical, dense- and many-flowered, flowers resembling tiny cotton-wool balls; bract and bracteoles subequal, colourless; perianth cream with shining tips exceeding the wool, purple to rose-pink turning straw-coloured, with a very short turbinate base; perianth-segments bordered, with a narrow reddish to greenish finally brownish centre, upper third to half glabrous, lower portion with finely tangled dorsal hairs, all glabrous inside; stamens mostly equal, 5 rarely 4 fertile, fused into a very short free cup; ovary glabrous; style more or less central, short; stigma conspicuous.
