Description:
Vigorous plant to 1.5 m tall, very variable in habit, up to 30 or more stems erect to spreading, irregularly branched usually in the upper part; leaves semisucculent, bright- to greyish-green, partly reddish-tinted, basal ones (up to 30) oblong-lanceolate, obovate, or more often broadly spathulate, mucronate, long-petiolate, to 20 x 9 cm, stem-leaves subsessile, to 8 x 4.5 cm.

Iridescent spikes conical lengthening to cylindrical, to 20 rarely 30 cm long when fully opened; bract to 1.2 cm long, hairy; inner perianth-segments copiously woolly-bearded, tube to 2.3 mm long; staminal ring ciliate; ovary longstipitate.
