Description:
Compact roundish soft undershrub, to about 60 cm high, younger stems and foliage mealy-tomentose; leaves broadly obovate to rhombic-ovate and spathulate, petiolate, to 3.6 X 1.8 cm.
Spikes numerous, terminal or lateral, hemispherical to globose or elongate-ovoid, 7-11 rarely 15 mm diam., greenish- to greyish-white with small tapering reddish marks, many-flowered; bract and bracteoles usually inconspicuous, sometimes brownish; perianth with straight dorsal hairs especially from below; perianth-segments (chiefly the inner ones) rigid, deep-red fading to brown in the lower portion, with a subacute-concave yellowish limb above, inner segments woolly-bearded below the limb, all joined near the base; stamens all perfect, staminal cup glabrous, adnate to the perianth base, with a free ring; ovary glabrous, style c. 2 mm long.
