Description:
Strongly scented herbaceous or suffruticose perennial 40-90 cm high, with dense to sparse woolly non-glandular hairs obscuring short capitate glandular hairs, especially on young growth; stems erect, with prominent serrulate wings 1-3 mm wide; leaves lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, acute to subacute, 3-5 cm long, 8-20 mm wide, prominently veined, rugose, green and hairy on both surfaces, serrulate.
Inflorescences ellipsoid to obovoid, 2-3.5 cm long, 1.2-1.5 cm diam.; involucres c. 4 mm long; outer bracts uniseriate, glandular, sparsely woolly at the apex; inner bracts c. 3-seriate, unequal, 2-4 mm long, torn-ciliate, glabrous, whitish; female florets 20-30; corollas purple to pink.
Achenes fusiform, c. 1 mm long, c. 4-ribbed, chestnut-brown; pappus bristles 20-25, 2-3 mm long.

Biology:
The var. velutinum differs from typical material only in the greater quantity of woolly hairs, a character which appears to vary continuously in Australian material; accordingly, the species is not divided into varieties in this treatment.
