Description:
Perennial herbs with a basal rosette of pinnate or digitate leaves, with or without stoloniferous branches; stipules joined to the petiole.

Flowers solitary, in the axil of the leaves; epicalyx of 4 or 5 sepals; inner sepals 4 or 5; petals 4 or 5; stamens many; carpels numerous, with 1 pendulous ovule, crowded on a dry or spongy strongly convex receptacle.

Fruit a head of achenes.

Distribution:  About 500 species, nearly cosmopolitan.
