Description:
Perennial shrublets with terete branches and a slightly woody base; leaves opposite, with stipules scarcely connate with the leaf base.
Inflorescence usually a terminal umbellate thyrse with 3-11 flower-like cymules on a long stalk and each usually with 3 flowers connate to one another and a funnel-shaped sepaloid involucre; flowers bisexual, 5-merous, protandrous; corolla tube funnel-shaped, at least twice as long as the lobes, deciduous; stamens with almost free filaments; anthers with a terminal appendage; ovary inferior, fused to others in the flower head to form a usually 3-locular compound fruit; style short, with 2 filiform stigmas.
Fruit with 1 seed in each cell, dehiscing by an almost round apical lid.
