Polygonum patulum

Citation: M. Bieb., Fl. Taur.-Caucas. 1:304 (1808).

Synonymy: Not Applicable

Common name: Tree hogweed, knotweed.

Description:
Glabrous annual; stems erect to 60 cm high or more, branched, slender, stiff, ribbed, striate; leaves often deciduous, shortly petiolate or subsessile, narrowly elliptic to linear-lanceolate, acute, 1-3 x 0.3-1.5 cm, with a prominent midrib beneath, yellowish-green; stipular sheath to 1.5 cm long, much shorter than the elongated internodes, cleft or torn, sometimes 2-partite, 6-8-nerved, hyaline, basal part brownish.

Flowers loosely scattered along the leafless parts of the stems, 1-3 in the axil of each bract, or somewhat denser and raceme-like, fragrant; pedicels 2-3.5 mm long; perianth-segments pink-green; style short, 3-partite.

Nut 2-3 mm long, included in the persistent perianth, ovoid, trigonous, apiculate, minutely punctate, shining, dark-brown.

Distribution:    naturalised in Vic. and S. Aust.   Native to Europe and Asia.

Conservation status: naturalised

Flowering time: Nov. — April.
