Derivation: Greek polycarpos, the name of some plants, from polys, many and carpos, fruit.

Description:
Stems usually branched, with longitudinal scabridulous ridges; leaves flat, obovate to suborbicular, often apparently verticillate, with scarious stipules.

Flowers small, in branched cymes, with scarious bracts, the sepals 5; petals 5, smaller than sepals; stamens 3-5; styles 3, united towards the base.

Distribution:  About 16 species in the warmer parts of the world.
