Synonymy: Manulea heterophylla L.f., Suppl. 285 (1782); Phyllopodium heterophyllum (L.f.)Benth. in Hook., Compan. Bot. Mag. 1:373 (1836).

Description:
Erect annual 3-20 cm high (to 30 cm in South Africa), simple or with erect to ascending branches produced from the basal nodes, absent or poorly developed above, white-eglandular-villous apart from the corolla; leaves in lower parts opposite, 5-35 x 1.5-11 mm, petiolate, with the blade ovate to broad-elliptic, higher up alternate, gradually shorter and narrower, sessile, the uppermost linear.

Flowers 5-20 or more in dense terminal pedunculate spikes, subhemispherical in flower, rarely interrupted below in fruit; bract oblong, as long as, rarely longer than the flower, fused to the pedicel and the base of the calyx; pedicel 0.5-1 mm long; calyx c. 2 mm long, with 5 lanceolate segments fused in the lower third; corolla c. 3 mm long, yellow, glabrous outside, the lobes 7-8 mm long.

Capsule ovoid-oblong, 3-4 mm long.

Distribution:  In disturbed, often sandy soil, in open woodland.

  W.Aust.   Native to South Africa.

Conservation status: naturalised

Flowering time: late Aug. — Oct.
