Description:
Robust aquatic or marsh-inhabiting perennial herb; stems 30-40 cm tall, sparsely to densely papillose with irregular golden papillae to c. 0.1 mm long; leaves dimorphic; submerged leaves in whorls of 4-6, broadly ovate to orbicular, pectinate, 25-45 (rarely 100) mm long, with 13-23 pinnae; emergent leaves in whorls of 4-6, linear, 10-45 mm long, acute, with 9-18 teeth in the distal three-quarters, sometimes papillose at the base.

Plants monoecious, flowers unisexual, usually at least some in fascicles of 2 or 3 in the axils of the leaves; bracteoles of male flowers oblong, 0.6-0.8 mm long, tip rounded, margins fimbriate; those of the female flowers minute; male flowers 4-merous, sessile; sepals lanceolate, c. 0.6 mm long, acute; petals white-hyaline, 2.5-3.6 mm long, hooded, tardily caducous; stamens 8; anthers linear-oblong; styles and ovary 0; female flowers 4-merous, on pedicels c. 0.3 mm long; sepals, petals and stamens 0; styles more or less sessile, stigmas long-fimbriate, mauve to a deep reddish-purple; ovary cubiform, c. 0.6 mm long, 4-locular (rarely 2-locular by abortion).

Fruit green to reddish-purple, cubiform; mericarps narrowly ovoid, 0.8-1 mm long, apex oblique, dorsal surface coarsely papillose.
