Description:
Small glabrous annuals; leaves all in a basal rosette, linear-filiform, somewhat dilated towards the base.
Flowers solitary on scapes; sepals 5, spurred; petals 5-7 or fewer, sometimes 0, inconspicuous, filiform-tubular, broadest near the apex; stamens 5-20.
Achenes 20-200 or more, spirally arranged in a slender spike on a greatly elongated fruiting torus, each with a stylar beak.

About 15 not well defined species in the temperate regions of both Hemispheres. In Australia only 1 species recorded; though it has often been reported to be introduced, it may be native and specifically distinct from the European and North American M. minimus, under which name it has generally been treated. It occurs in moist places chiefly near inland watercourses.
