Description:
Herbs and undershrubs, usually small and glabrous; leaves alternate, entire, flat or with recurved margins; stipules small; monoecious.
Flowers more or less pedicellate, in dense head-like sessile or shortly pedunculate cymes, in forks or at the ends of branches between the last leaves; male flowers usually numerous; calyx of 4 or 5 usually petal-like imbricate spreading segments; petals as many as calyx segments and shorter or longer; stamens twice as many as petals or fewer; filaments free or very shortly united basally; without any rudimentary ovary; anthers with 2 distinct small almost globular cells separated by a curved thick connective; female flowers 1 or few per cyme among the males; calyx and petals as in the males or petals absent; ovary 3-celled, each 1-ovulate; styles deeply 2-fid, with fringed branches.
Capsule globular or 3-lobed, without appendages; seeds 3, ovate or narrow-ovate, smooth, carunculate terminally; embryo linear, mostly straight; cotyledons much longer but scarcely broader than the radicle.
