Citation: L., Sp. Pl. 463 (1753).

Derivation: Latin name of a plant believed to be Galium mollugo, a European herb with whorled leaves, applied to the present genus because the leaves appear verticillate.

Synonymy: Not Applicable

Common name: None

Description:
Annual herb, glabrous, with rosulate caducous radical leaves; stem-leaves apparently whorled; stipules small and caducous.

Flowers on axillary peduncles; perianth of 5 free segments, imbricate in the bud; stamens 5, without staminodes; ovary superior, 3-celled, with many axile ovules in each cell; styles 3.

Fruit a membranous capsule, opening loculicidally; seeds without caruncles or any linear appendage proceeding therefrom, smooth or granulated.

Distribution:  About 20 species in warm countries. (R.S. Adamson (1958) Jl. S. Afr. Bot. 24:11-65).
