Derivation: After Konrad Moench, 1744-1805, German botanist and professor at the University of Marburg.

Description:
Annual herb; stems branched or simple; leaves opposite, exstipulate.

Flowers in cymes from the upper axils or terminal, on rather long peduncles; sepals 4, with pale border; petals 4, without an apical notch; stamens 4 or 8; styles 4, opposite the petals.

Capsule opening at the summit by 8 obtuse teeth.

Distribution:  6 European and Mediterranean species.
