Description:
Perennial herbs, with scattered simple and stellate hairs; leaves palmately lobed, toothed.

flowers bisexual, pedunculate, single in leaf axils, moderately showy; epicalyx of 3 free segments; sepals fused below to form a campanulate tube with 5 lobes; petals 5, slightly longer than the sepals, brightly coloured; staminal tube subpyramidal, with the anthers at the apex; carpels many, in a single whorl; stigmas capitate, on slender style branches; ovules 2 or 3 in each carpel.

fruit more or less disc-shaped, flat above, consisting of many fruitlets (mericarps) which are 2-awned distally, 2-valved and divided by an incomplete horizontal partition into 2 superposed cells, the upper cell containing 1 ascending seed and the lower one a pendulous seed.
