Citation: L., Sp. Pl. 436(1753).

Derivation: Greek lykhnis, from lukhnos, a lamp; the leaves of L. coronaria were used as lamp wicks.

Common name: None

Description:
Perennial herbs; leaves opposite, exstipulate.

Flowers few, cymose; calyx tube long, with 5 teeth and 10 ribs; petals 5, with 2 coronal scales in the throat opposite each petal, with a long claw and spreading lamina; stamens 10; styles 5.

Capsule opening at the summit by 5 teeth; seeds numerous, reniform, tuberculate.

Distribution:  About 10 species in Europe and Asia.
