Description:
Shrubs, rarely tree-like, evergreen or deciduous; leaves opposite, simple, entire.
Inflorescence terminal or axillary, cymose-paniculate; flowers hermaphrodite, often strongly scented; calyx small, campanulate, with 4 blunt dentate lobes; corolla sympetalous, with 4 valvate lobes; stamens 2, attached near the top of the corolla tube, anthers ellipsoid, enclosed or exserted; ovary ovoid; style terminal, with a more or less 2-lobed stigma.
Fruit a 1- or 2-seeded drupelet.
