Description:
Virgate shrub c. 1 m high; branches rigid, often not spine-tipped, terete, shallowly but regularly longitudinally ridged, yellow-green; leaves only persisting briefly.
Spike-like racemes dense at first, 3-15 mm long, usually fewer than 30-flowered; bracts enclosing each flower at first and often persisting during flowering, ovate-lanceolate, toothed especially towards the summit; perianth white, c. 0.5 mm long; ovary c. 1 mm long.
Fruit dry.
