Description:
Evergreen shrubs, usually climbing or scrambling; leaves opposite (or alternate not in S.Aust.), (simple not in S.Aust.), 3-foliolate (or pinnate not in S.Aust.).
Inflorescence terminal or axillary, cymose-paniculate, or few-flowered; flowers heterostylous, fragrant; calyx small, campanulate, with usually 4 or 5 small more or less triangular teeth or filiform lobes; corolla hypocrateriform, lobes imbricate, 5-8 or rarely more, white (yellow or red not in S.Aust.); stamens 2, borne within the corolla tube, anthers often with a small terminal appendage; ovary rounded, style long or short, with 2 more or less linear stigmatic lobes.
Fruit a didymous berry or single-seeded by abortion. About 200 species native to the Old World, mostly tropical.
