Description:
A slender attenuated shrub of almost tree-like habit, 1-2.5 m high; branches reddish, flexuose, with white appressed hairs; leaves 2-5 cm long; leaflets 5-9 usually 7, distinctly petiolulate, obovate-lanceolate or elliptic, 7-12 x 4-6 mm, obtuse or slightly truncate, mucronate, paler beneath, with white appressed hairs, often with a distinct central vein, glabrous and greenish above, more or less conduplicate; stipules narrow-triangular, to 5 mm long, leathery, quite glabrous, often recurved and forming small pointed thorns; stipels lanceolate-subulate, to 1.5 mm long or reduced to a bunch of short subulate reddish glabrous glands.

Inflorescence a shortly pedunculate raceme, 2-3 cm long, shorter or longer than the leaves, at first condensed, later loose, several- to 12- or more-flowered; flowers on pedicels 1.5-2.5 mm long, at first upright, later pendulous; bract lanceolate-subulate, 1.5-2.5 mm, brown, leathery, pubescent, often ciliate, caducous, encircled by reddish subulate glands at the base; calyx campanulate, the base slightly truncate, 2-3 mm long, after anthesis open and oblique on top with 5 unequal teeth, pubescent with white and/or rufous appressed hairs, the short upper lip with a wide sinus ending in 2 narrow-triangular to subulate teeth; the lower lip larger, with 3 longer triangular-lanceolate teeth, the lowest the largest, longer than the tube; petals a dark purplish-red, caducous; standard orbicular, 4-5 mm long, pubescent on the back, longest; wings and keel obtuse, subequal.

Pod cylindric, 2-2.5 mm x c. 3 mm, reddish-brown, with distinct sutures, with appressed strigose hairs but appearing glabrous, 4-10-seeded; seeds cuboid, c. 2 mm, green-brown with dark spots.

Taxonomic notes: Shows similarities with I. australis but differs in having flexuose branches, leaves and inflorescence of similar length and all 5 calyx teeth always present.
