Citation: R. Br., in Tuckey, Narr. Exped. Congo 442 (1818).

Derivation: Greek hymen, membrane; antheros, flowering and botanical Latin anthra, an anther; referring to the membranous appendages of the anthers.

Description:
Shrubs; leaves alternate or clustered; stipules minute.

Flowers solitary or clustered, axillary, often on older stems, bisexual or unisexual, slightly zygomorphic; sepals very shortly united at the base; petals equal or nearly so; staminal filaments very short, connivent in an urceolate tube, connectives produced into a dentate membranous appendage; ovary with 2 or 3 1-ovulate placentas; stigma 2- rarely 3-lobed.

Fruit a berry; seeds with a caruncle.

Distribution:  4 species in Australia and New Zealand.
