Haloragis heterophylla

Citation: Brongn. in Duperrey, Voy. la Coquille t. 68A (1831).

Synonymy: H. ceratophylla Zahlbr. ex Endl., Atakta Bot. 16 (1834); H. filiformis A. Gray, U.S. Expl. Exped. 15:628 (1854); H. heterophylla Brongn. var. linearis J. Black, Fl. S. Aust. 643 (1952).

Common name: Perennial raspweed, variable raspwort.

Perennial herb 15-50 cm tall, with a deep stoloniferous rootstock; stems 4-ribbed, with spreading hyaline 2-3-celled hairs c. 0.2 mm long and hooked at the tip, rarely glabrous; leaves subopposite or opposite below, alternate above, sessile, linear, 3fid or multifid, 10-30 mm long, scabrous.

Inflorescence composed of 1-3- (rarely 4-) flowered dichasia; lateral inflorescences in the axils of the upper leaves; bracts linear, 3-5 mm long, entire, scabrous; bracteoles brown, linear, 0.3-0.6 mm long, entire; flowers 4-merous, subpendulous; sepals narrowly deltoid, 0.8-1.2 mm long; petals red, 2.2-2.8 mm long; stamens 8; anthers oblong, 1.3-1.5 (rarely to 2.4)mm long; styles 4, stigmas red; ovary globular, 0.6-0.8 mm diam., smooth, scabrous, 4-locular.

Fruits 1 or 2 per axil, pendulous, on pedicels 0.5-0.7 mm long, pear-shaped with the narrow end distally, 1.5-2.4 mm long, 1.3-1.8 mm wide, 4-ribbed and angled, irregularly rugose in the lower half, scabrous, 4-locular.

Taxonomic notes: This species intergrades to some extent with H. aspera. True H. heterophylla is a more slender plant than H. aspera, with 3-fid (not "pinnately" toothed) leaves, and smaller more delicate 4-angled fruits.
