Description:
Herbaceous annual 20-40 cm tall; rootstock a tap root; stems smooth, glabrous; leaves subsucculent, lowermost subopposite, most alternate, on a winged petiole 5-10 mm long, linear-lanceolate to oblanceolate, 20-50 mm long, 5-12 mm wide, 6-8-toothed, glabrous.

Inflorescence composed of 7-15- flowered dichasia; bracts similar to the leaves at the base of the inflorescence, reduced and almost absent above; bracteoles hyaline, membranous, deltoid, 0.1-0.9 mm long, caducous; flowers 3-merous, on pedicels 0.8-1.5 mm long, glabrous; sepals ovate, 0.8-1 mm long, smooth; petals yellow-green to red or brown, 2.5-3 mm long; stamens 6; anthers oblong, c. 2.5 mm long; styles 3, c. 0.5 mm long; ovary obovoid, 1-1.5 mm long, 3-winged longitudinally opposite the petals, 3-locular.

Fruit green to brown, on a pedicel c. 2 mm long, ovate or obcordate in outline, 6.5-8 mm long, 5.5-8 mm wide, body of fruit ovoid, 3-winged, irregularly rugose or ribbed between the wings; wings opaque, papery; 3-locular.
