Hakea tephrosperma

Synonymy: Hakea vittata sensu J.H. Willis, Hdbk pl. Vici. 2:50 (1973), auct. non R. Br. , Hakea leucoptera

Common name: Hooked needlewood.

Description:
Shrub or small tree resembling H. leucoptera; leaves 3-8 cm X 1-1.5 rarely to 1.8 mm, glabrescent, not grooved, apex abruptly curved, mucro 0.8-2 mm.

Inflorescence an umbelliform raceme of 6-22 white flowers; rhachis simple, 1-3 mm long, with a dense more or less appressed brown pubescence; pedicel and perianth with appressed brown and white hairs; pedicel 3.5-7 mm long; torus oblique; perianth 5-6 mm long, limb 1-1.5 mm long; anthers 0.5-0.75 rarely 0.9 mm long; gland semi-annular, 0.25-0.75 mm long laterally; pistil 7-10 mm long, vertically inserted, sometimes with a few appressed hairs; pollen-presenter a disc 0.9-1 rarely to 1.4 mm long; fruit 2-3 cm long, smooth, sometimes pusticulate, in median view ovate, in lateral view broad-ovate, 1.5-2 cm wide, with a broad beak, sometimes with a brief narrow beak, with 2 blunt horns to 2 mm long, dehiscing fully down both sides, with the area beside seed cavity broad, pale-yellow.

Seed 1.4-2 X 0.7-0.85 cm, body 0.6-1 cm long, wing decurrent down one side only, grey-yellow to blackish.

Distribution:  Recorded from open spinifex and bluebush shrubland on sandy loam.

S.Aust.: EA, MU.   Qld; N.S.W.; Vic.
