Annual herbs; leaves linear.

Flowers cymose or solitary; calyx ovoid, 5-toothed, with 5 nerves forming 5 prominent angles; petals 5, pinkish, without wings or scales; styles 2.

Capsule opening by 4 teeth; seeds with a lateral hilum.

Distribution:  About 125 species throughout the world.
