Derivation: Greek glykeros, sweet; alluding to the herbage and seeds of G. fluitans.

Description:
Perennial or annual usually aquatic grasses, with creeping rhizomes; leaf blades usually narrow, flat; ligule membranous, lacerated.

Inflorescence a panicle; spikelets few- to many-flowered, cylindrical or slightly compressed, solitary; glumes 2, persistent, unequal, mostly 1-nerved; lemmas rounded on the back and not keeled, prominently 3-9-nerved; ovary glabrous.

Distribution:  Cosmopolitan; with about 40 species; 3 native and 2 naturalised in Australia.
