Description:
Perennial shrubs with branches becoming woody; leaves opposite, petiolate, serrate-dentate.
Inflorescence raceme-like with 1-3 flowers in the axils of each leaf-like bract; floral tube 0.8-1 cm long, glabrous, deciduous; sepals 4, free; petals 4, obovate, truncate, a deep purplish-blue, forming a cylindrical tube when expanded; stamens 8 in 2 whorls of different length, with anthers dorsifixed, c. 2 mm long; ovary inferior, with 4 locules each with a few ovules on an axile placenta; style with short hairs, usually longer than the stamens, with a capitate more or less 4-lobed stigma.
