Citation: L., Sp. Pl. 246 (1753).

Derivation: Latin name of some species of this genus, also denoting a rod, on account of the tall straight stems.

Description:
Stout glabrous erect perennial herbs; leaves 3- or 4-pinnate, with many linear ultimate segments.

Inflorescence composed of compound umbels, the upper ones often in whorls; involucre absent; involucel absent or of few bracteoles; flowers polygamous, those of the terminal umbel female; sepals absent or minute, petals yellow, oblong or ovate, entire, incurved; disk high; styles reflexed.

Fruit elliptical or oblong-elliptical, strongly compressed dorsally; mericarps with 3 filiform dorsal ribs and 2 lateral ones extended into flattened thick wings which are appressed to those of the other mericarp; commissure flat; vittae usually numerous.

Distribution:  About 135 species from the Mediterranean region to central Asia.
