Electronic Flora of South Australia species Fact Sheet

Family: Myrtaceae
Eucalyptus trivalvis

Citation: Blakely, Trans. R. Soc. S. Aust. 60:155 (1936).

Synonymy: The original spelling was trivalva. This has been changed to trivalvis by recent authors in the belief that the original spelling was not "grammatically correct" although it may be preferable to treat the original as a noun in apposition rather than an adjective and, therefore, perhaps orthographically acceptable.

Common name: Victoria Spring mallee.

Usually multi-stemmed, up to 4 m high; bark smooth except at the base, cinnamon-pink or reddish-brown, glossy when newly exposed; cotyledons deeply 2-fid; juvenile leaves opposite or subopposite at first, lanceolate-elliptic to ovate-elliptic; adult leaves alternate, on petioles 10-20 mm long, lanceolate to broad-lanceolate, dull, grey-green or bluish-green, 6-13 cm long, 1.5-3 cm broad; veins indistinct.

Flowers in pedunculate umbels of 5-11 in the axils of the leaves; peduncles somewhat expanded at their apices; buds ellipsoid or pear-shaped on pedicels 1-4 mm long, 5-12 x 2-4 mm; operculum conical or hemispherical, shorter than the hypanthium; flowers white or cream; anthers all fertile.

Fruits cylindrical-ellipsoid, greenish when ripe, smooth but drying wrinkled, with a narrow rim, 6-8 x 4-6 mm; disk vertical; valves 3 or occasionally 4, broadly triangular, enclosed or just exserted; seeds polygonal, with one large convex surface, grey-brown (sterile seeds reddish-brown).

Distribution:  The locality in the north of the EP region is remarkably isolated from its main distribution.

  W.Aust.; N.T.

Conservation status: native

Flowering time: spring — summer.
