Eucalyptus ovata

Synonymy: E. gunnii sensu F. Muell., Fragm. Phyt. Aust. 2:62 (1860); E. stuartiana sensu Benth., Fl. Aust. 3:243 (1866), partly; E. paludosa R.T. Baker, Proc. Linn. Soc. N.S.W. 23:167 (1898); E. ovata Labill. var. grandiflora Maiden, Crit. Rev. Eucalyptus 27:146 (1916); E. acervula Hook. f., Fl. Tasm. 1:135 (1856).

Common name: Labill., Nov. Holl. Pl. Sp. 2:13 (1806) var. ovata. Swamp gum.

Single-stemmed trees to 17 m high; bark smooth, pale, streaked, shedding in strips but often persisting on the lower half; cotyledons notched or reniform; juvenile leaves opposite to alternate, subsessile or petiolate, elliptic to ovate; adult leaves alternate, on petioles 15-25 mm long, ovate-lanceolate, undulate, glossy, leathery, 7-14 x 2-4 cm.

Flowers in umbels of 4-10 in the axils of the leaves; buds on pedicels 2-4 mm long but sometimes merging with the maturing hypanthium, biconical, smooth, 7-10 x 4-6 mm; operculum conical to rostrate, equal to or shorter than the hypanthium; flowers white; anthers all fertile, obcordate.

Fruits obconical, with narrow rim and descending disk, 4-8 x 5-7 mm; valves triangular, the tips more or less level with the rim; seeds blackish, irregularly shaped, with shallow depressions, sometimes with a narrow almost wing-like margin.

Distribution:    N.S.W.; Vic.; Tas. Often in temporarily wet places.

Conservation status: native
