Citation: Schauer in Lehm., Pl. Preiss. 1:130 (1844).

Synonymy: E. leptophylla F. Muell. ex Miq., Nederl. Kruidk. Arch. 4:123 (1856); E. leptophylla F. Muell. ex Miq. var. densa Blakely, Trans. R. Soc. S. Aust. 60:155 (1936).

Common name: Narrow-leaved mallee, March (or slender-leaved) mallee, slender-leaved red mallee.

Multi-stemmed and up to 3 m high or single-stemmed and up to 9 m; bark smooth, grey, shedding to expose a white to reddish-brown layer, with strips of bark persisting at the base; cotyledons deeply 2-fid; juvenile leaves opposite to alternate, mainly sessile, linear to suborbicular, often glaucous; adult leaves alternate, on petioles 5-10 mm long, narrowly lanceolate, sometimes uncinate, glossy, light-green, 3-10 x 0.4-1 cm.

Flowers in umbels of up to 11 in the axils of the leaves; buds on pedicels 1-3 mm long, narrowly obovoid, smooth, often reddish, 6-8 x 3-4 mm; operculum conical, often obtuse, about as long as the hypanthium; flowers cream-coloured; anthers all fertile, obovate.

Fruits globose or hemispherical to pear-shaped, narrowed slightly to the orifice, thick-walled, smooth or with a few ridges, disk descending, 3-6 x 3-6 mm; valves triangular, with fragile needle-like points which are included or exserted; seeds pale-brown, ellipsoid, faintly reticulate.
