Derivation: After J. F. Eschscholz, 1793-1834, Professor at the University of Dorpat.

Description:
Annuals or biennials, often with a stout tap root, with colourless sap; leaves more or less petiolate on the whole plant, deeply bipinnatisect, slightly fleshy.

Sepals 2, fused into a calyptra, caducous; petals 4; stamens numerous; stigma with 4 thread-like lobes on a short style, not persistent in fruit.

Capsule ellipsoid, dehiscing by 2 valves along the whole length.

Distribution:  A genus of about 12 species from western North America.
