Description:
Annual with long taproots; leaves entire or nearly so, generally ovate; stipular sheaths truncate and cleft at the apex.
Flowers monoecious, small, in axillary whorl-like clusters; male flowers with 5 or 6 spreading perianth-segments and 4-6 stamens; female flowers with a triangular tube and 6 lobes, the 3 outer lobes becoming in fruit 3 rigid spines, the 3 inner lobes ovate to lanceolate and erect; styles 3.
Fruit a trigonous nut.
