Description:
A tomentose shrub 1-1.5 rarely 2 m high; stem erect, branching chiefly near the base, densely greyish-tomentose, young branchlets with a purplish- or greenish-grey tomentum; leaves decussate, petiolate, elliptic-ovate, lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate, entire, 4.5-8.5 cm long, 1.5-3 cm broad, up to 1.5 mm thick, densely and thickly tomentose, young leaves with a purplish- or greenish-grey tomentum; petiole 0.5-1 cm long, densely tomentose.

Inflorescence with a purplish-grey, purplish-cream or greenish-grey tomentum; cymes in pyramidal panicles, pedunculate, crowded in headlike woolly clusters (except var. laxa); peduncles 1-2.5 (rarely 3.5) cm long, with a purplish-grey tomentum; flowers pedicellate; pedicel 2-3 (rarely 4) mm long; bracts linear-lanceolate, 2-2.5 mm long, woolly-tomentose outside, glabrous inside; calyx 5-lobed, 3.5-4.5 mm long, glandular and densely woolly-tomentose outside, glabrous inside, with minute glands on the lobes; lobes linear-lanceolate, almost free to the base, 2.5-3.8 mm long; tube 0.5-1 mm long; corolla purplish, tubular, 5-lobed towards the apex, 6.5-7 mm long, glandular and short-tomentose outside, villous inside the tube; lobes elliptic-oblong, 1.5-2 mm long; tube cylindrical, c. 5 mm long; stamens 5, sometimes 4, scarcely exserted; filaments 2-2.5 mm long, glabrous; anthers oblong, brownish-yellow, 1-1.1 mm long; ovary globular, silky-tomentose, 2-3 mm diam.; style scarcely exserted, tomentose below the lobes, 3.5-5.5 mm long (including the lobes), lobes filiform, 1.8-2.5 mm long, glabrous.

Fruit globose, silky-hairy, 2.5-3 mm diam.
