Description:
Perennials with strongly compressed aerial shoots.

Panicle compound, the lower branches usually long, or spike-like; spikelets compressed laterally, 3-several-flowered, densely crowded in thick 1-sided clusters; rhachilla disarticulating; glumes nearly equal, keeled, acute, persistent, shorter than the florets; lemmas keeled, mucronate, stiff, 5-nerved.

Distribution:  5 species from Europe, North Africa and Asia.
