Description:
Tall bulbous herbs; leaves long, broad-linear, basal, spirally arranged, present during flowering.
Flowers large, usually white, sessile or pedicellate in an umbel which is at first enclosed in a spathe of 2 broad membranous bracts at the summit of a stout leafless scape; perianth deciduous, with a slender tube and 6 nearly equal lobes; corona 0; stamens 6, inserted at the base of the lobes; the anthers versatile, linear; style filiform, long; stigma capirate; ovary 3-celled, with several ovules superposed in 2 rows sunk in the axile placentas.
Capsule opening irregularly, with 2 or 3 seeds.
