Citation: L., Sp. Pl. 475 (1753).

Derivation: Latin crataegus or crataegon, from Greek krataigon, some plant of this family.

Synonymy: Not Applicable

Common name: Hawthorns.

Description:
Woody shrubs or small trees, deciduous, often spiny; leaves wedge-shaped at the base, lobed at the apex; stipules large, leafy.

Inflorescence a corymb; sepals 5, short; petals 5, suborbicular; stamens 5-25; carpels 1-5, walls stony in fruit, styles 1-5, ovules 2.

Fruit fleshy, usually red, calyx persistent.

Distribution:  A large (c. 200 species) Northern Hemisphere genus with many species in America.

Taxonomic notes: The genus is taxonomically complex with many variants and presumed hybrids.
