Description:
Creeping herbs or small shrubs; leaves simple, entire or sometimes toothed, sheathing at the base, without stipules.
Umbels simple, solitary or axillary in fascicles, usually subsessile, 3- to few-flowered, rarely flowers solitary; involucral bracts few or absent; flowers bisexual or the lateral male; sepals usually absent; petals broad, obtuse, imbricate; stylopodium flat.
Fruit laterally compressed, without vittae; commissure narrow; mericarps curved, swollen, hard, with 7-9 longitudinal ridges with reticulate connections; the 2 lateral ribs free.

About 20-40 species (depending on concept), chiefly in the Southern Hemisphere, predominantly in the Cape Province of South Africa; 2 or 3 very closely allied species in Australia.
