Description:
Densely tufted, in clumps to 1 m diam., to 1 m high or more; stems terete or obtusely triangular near the top only, smooth, finely striate; leaves often rudimentary or reduced to their sheaths, sometimes laminae well-developed but these are relatively inconspicuous among the numerous culms.
Inflorescence a long narrow spike-like panicle mostly less than 10 cm long, the lowest bracts usually inconspicuous; glumes somewhat obtuse, the female glumes with a conspicuous wide hyaline border; utricle ovate to suborbicular with a short indistinctly toothed beak, distinctly biconvex and decidedly turgid on one face, 3-3.5 mm long.

Grows in damp ground, especially if subject to occasional flooding.
