Annual herb to 40 cm high; stems erect or ascending, much-branched, pubescent, often becoming woody at the base; radical leaves petiolate, cuneate, 2-4 cm long, soon withering; cauline leaves sessile, cuneate to narrow-cuneate, 1-4 cm long, 2-10 mm wide, narrow at the base, dentate or lobed near the apex, strigose to pubescent,
Capitula solitary or in loose leafy terminal cymes of 2-8, c. 1 cm diam.; receptacle conical, c. 1.5 mm diam., naked; involucral bracts 25-30, lanceolate, acute, 2.2-3.2 mm long, pubescent; ray florets 55-65, multiseriate; ligules linear, 3-4 mm long, mauve.
Achenes 1.2-1.5 mm long, smooth, with straight simple hairs; wings broad, triangular, c. 0.5 mm long, ciliate on margins; pappus of 6-11 unequal awns, 0.5-1 mm long, rigid, barbed; disk florets sterile.
